Speed
Amphetamines and related drugs, such as methamphetamines are commonly abused. These drugs go by the common name of “speed”. They work by increasing the level of certain chemicals in the brain – namely dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine.
Amphetamines are available in two forms. They are often prescribed to treat disorders such as narcolepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and chronic fatigue syndrome. At one point they were commonly prescribed to help people lose and manage their weight, although that practice was stopped when widespread use became apparent. The most popular brand names of amphetamines are Adderall, Ritalin and Vyvanse. These drugs are available in pill form, and are either taken orally or crushed and snorted by the user. |
Crank
The other form of Amphetamines that are illicitly made street drugs. These drugs are manufactured using over the counter pharmaceuticals as well as toxic household chemicals, and are made in a very dangerous process. The resulting drug is available in a powder or crystal form, and can be snorted, smoked or injected by the user. The street name for these drugs is “Crank”, “Crystal”, “Meth” and “Ice”.
Physical and Psychological Effects
There are many physical effects from the use of Amphetamines, which together can help identify a user. The most prevalent and obvious effects are insomnia, increased energy level and reduced appetite. These effects made amphetamines a traditionally abused drug with long distance truck drivers, as it enables them to stay up long hours and drive without the need to sleep. Additional physical effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, sweating, increased respiration rate and increased blood pressure.
The psychological effects of amphetamines and related drugs that are most apparent are agitation, nervousness, anxiety, talkativeness and increased aggression. Most users use the drug for the euphoria, sense of well being, alertness, increased concentration and feelings of superiority and power that are often reported by users.
Addiction and Treatment
Addiction to amphetamines and related drugs is traditionally one of the hardest dependencies to treat because of the psychological dependence to the drug that is created with continued use. The physical addiction to amphetamines is not as strong as with drugs such as heroin or alcohol, but the psychological addiction is as hard if not harder to break. A user who has agreed to come into recovery will start with a short stay in a detoxification facility to physically stabilize, followed by a longer term drug rehab treatment facility.

The treatment phase of the amphetamine user’s recovery is an essential step to help them build a solid foundation for a lifetime of sobriety. The treatment should have three main focuses. First, the patient needs to work a course of relapse prevention, in which they focus on the psychological and environmental stressors that lead to them craving and using the drug. Secondly, they work closely with a therapist to help identify and work through the underlying issues in their personal history that led to their original and continued use. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, they must construct an aftercare plan that will help them with the daily maintenance necessary to keep the sobriety that they achieved in treatment.
