Why Relapse Prevention is Necessary
There are many things that can lead to relapse. A range of emotional issues can leave the recovering addict prone to relapse back into substance abuse and destructive behaviors. Inversely, abusing drugs and alcohol can lead to a relapse of mental disorders and emotional issues.

"A recovering addict needs to be aware of their relapse triggers."
Relapse prevention can be the difference between lasting recovery and returning to a life of abusing drugs and alcohol. When someone is said to have a dual diagnosis, or co-existing disorders, relapse prevention is even more important. A recovering addict needs to be aware of their relapse triggers. The aim of relapse prevention is to educate patients about their triggers and prepare them to deal with these triggers once they complete addiction treatment. |
A Specific Plan is Needed
Relapse prevention's purpose is to prevent a patient from returning to their destructive behaviors. Relapse prevention is about awareness of the relapse process that begins a long time before that first drink or mental health issue arises. Many times an individual becomes complacent in their recovery and may decide not to seek help when they need it. Some may begin to act in ways that are destructive to their recovery process. Each patient's relapse prevention plan should be tailored specifically to address relapse triggers that are unique to each patient.
